During the fall of 2007, Fenguin Design was approached by Prof. Rohit Bhargava, Prof. Michael Insana and Prof. Michael Haney of the Bioengineering Department of the University of Illinois to create the Virtual Bioimaging Laboratory. The site was intended to be be used for a future bioimaging class, and would feature information and virtual simulations in several imaging modalities. One major stipulation was to have the site editable by all of the professors and students working on the project, including those without web design experience.
After initial design plans were approved, Fenguin Design constructed a collaborative website, building from scratch a custom wiki-based interface for editing information and simulation pages, in addition to the menu navigation for each modality. The custom wiki software allowed users to rearrange pages under each modality into an organizational tree, and provided easy tools for rearranging and moving pages within that tree structure. Capabilities for linking between pages, adding images and documents, and adding LaTeX equations were also implemented into the software to maximize the website's performance and ease of use for both editors and future students.
The site features a very elegant, easy-to-use interface with pleasing colors and special effects. It is secure and intuitive to use for users wishing to contribute content and for students who will be accessing the content in the future.
